Niz zečju rupu/Down the Rabbit Hole
During the pandemic period, we stepped into a state of anomic consciousness. Everything that is is not, can be, or may not be. Referencing the “nonsense” found in Alice in Wonderland, the dancers enter a process of repeated ascents and descents, fragmentation, running, jumping, and constant attempts to solve problems, abandoning their roles and staging play itself as a performance that becomes a symbol of Sisyphean labour — a continuous search for meaning in the process of creating dance material.
We start and stop, rush forward and disappear, try and then stop again. In these stage “fragments,” we attempted to convey the atmosphere of our working process. Through numerous dead ends, openings and closures, trials and errors, the only thing we consistently find — and that drives and sustains us — is shared energy, our play; which in the end becomes and remains the only meaning within which we endlessly and uncompromisingly invest all our effort and give ourselves completely, despite a system that relentlessly consumes us.
The performance was first presented as a work-in-progress (pre-premiere) on 18 June 2022 at the Amphitheatre of the Youth Center (Dom mladih), Split.
